Please join the Department of Anthropology for a lecture by Yara M. Asi, Ph.D.—“Racism as a Determinant of Health in the Conflict Environment: Evidence from the Palestinian Territories”
An abundance of research, especially in the past decade, has firmly situated racism as a structural and social determinant of health. However, this framing has engaged minimally with populations living in areas affected by conflict, despite the evidence linking racism to why war is waged, how wars are fought, and how affected populations are protected—or whether they are offered protection at all. Guided by principles of health equity, this talk explores how groups are racialized in conflict environments, with disastrous consequences for life, health, and well-being. Analysis of recent events in the occupied Palestinian territories, along with the trajectory of events over the past 75 years, elucidates the ways in which structural racism is a driver of health inequities for conflict-affected populations.
